There are many different models and sizes of dog cages available and it’s a very important step to pick the one that’s right for your pet. If you get one that’s too small and your dog will be cramped and uncomfortable. If it’s too large on the other hand, then they could end up using one end of the crate to sleep and the other end as a bathroom. Neither of these scenarios are ideal so we are going to give a brief rundown on the different size of crates available.
Extra Extra Large (XXL) | 48 Inch – 54 Inches Long
Some breeds that fit in this class are: Giant Schnauzer, Great Pyrenees, Alaskan Malamute, Bloodhound, Great Dane, Greyhound, Saint Bernard, Rottweiler, Old English Sheepdog, Bernese Mountain Dog and Newfoundland dogs.
Extra Large (XL) | 42 Inches in Length
The next smaller size is the extra large. This particular size of kennel is suited for pets that weigh between 70-90 pounds. The dimensions will be around 42L x 28W x 31H or 42L x 28W x 30H. Some breeds that fit this description are: Border Collie, German Shepherd, Labrador, Chow-Chow, Golden Retriever, Siberian Husky, Doberman Pinscher, Boxer, Poodle, Irish Setter, Australian Shepherd, Dalmation and Retrievers.
Large | 36 Inches Long
The large size of cage is a very common one that fits a lot of the most popular dog breeds. There are many different kinds available in this size from plastic to wire. The dimensions will be roughly 36L x 24W x 27H or 36L x 23W x 25H.
They are best suited for dogs around 40-70 pounds. This accounts for the following breeds: Belgian Sheepdog, Schnauzer, English Setter, Bull Terrier, Chinese Shar-Pei, Harrier, Welsh Corgi, Bulldog, Basset Hound, English Springer Spaniel and more.
Medium | 30 Inches in Length
The following breeds are a good fit for this: King Charles Spaniel, Shetland Sheepdog, Cocker Spaniel, Miniature Schnauzer, French Bulldog, Welsh Terrier, Dachshund, American Pit Bull, Minature Pinschers and more.
Small | 24 Inches Long
Small canines need carriers too and luckily there are a lot of great options out there. Anything with dimensions around 24L x 18W x 21H or 24Lx 18W x 19H should do the trick. This size of crate is best for pets around 10-25 pounds and these breeds: Yorkshire Terrier, Boston Terrier, Maltese, Jack Russell Terrier, Tibetan Spaniel, Border Terrier, Miniature Poodle, Miniature Dachshund and many more.
Extra Small (XS)
The final size category is the extra small style of carriers. These ones are anything with dimensions smaller than the small size, so around 18L x 18W. Any animal with a weight of under 10 pounds is a perfect candidate for this size of cage. So breeds like: Chihuahua, Shih Tzu, Papillon, Pomeranian, Jack Russel Terrier, Maltese, Yorkshire Terrier, Boston Terrier and Pugs.
